RTL Today
Voters in Esch-sur-Alzette, including those exempted by age, continue to uphold Luxembourg’s longstanding tradition of mandatory voting, reflecting a broader sentiment of civic responsibility and hope for progressive change in the nation.

Slowly but surely, the 310 people registered to vote at polling station n°14 in Esch-sur-Alzette came in throughout the morning. In total there were 13.013 voters registered in the southern metropole.

Since 1942, voting is mandatory for Luxembourgers aged 18 and older. Exceptions can be made, but individuals then have to fill out a form that declares them unable to participate. This form must also be given to the prosecutor’s office in advance.

Compulsory voting stops at 75 years of age, but people keep their right to vote.
