High-voltage power line through LuxembourgEnvironment ministry opts for minimal impact route

After concerns were raised by a local citizens' initiative, the Ministry of the Environment decided to retain only one option in the proposed construction of a high-voltage power line across Luxembourg.

The Ministry of the Environment has completed and published its assessment regarding the construction of a 380,000-volt high-voltage power line with a delay of about a month and a half.

Only one of the five possible options was retained. The selected route passes through 17 municipalities, covers 47 kilometres of Luxembourg territory, and “prioritised both nature and public health,” Minister of the Environment Serge Wilmes explained.

These plans take into account the concerns of the citizens’ initiative of Imbringen and the municipality of Junglinster: The option that was retained by the Ministry of the Environment runs across the so-called “Bierger-Bierg”, a plateau on the Gonderange side towards Luxembourg City. As a result, the nature conservation zones on the Altlinster and Imbringen sides will not be affected, according to the Ministry of the Environment.

On Tuesday, this conclusion will be officially passed on to electricity provider Creos. In principle, the company has the final say in the matter but is ultimately required to obtain further authorisations, which includes the public enquiry.
