Civil servants at Luxembourg's Ministry of Education have logged more overtime than any other government department, racking up 2.25 million hours between 2021 and 2024, according to new figures from the Civil Service Ministry.

Civil servants in Luxembourg’s Ministry of Education have accumulated more overtime than any other department, according to a detailed response from Civil Service Minister Serge Wilmes to a recent parliamentary question from MP Ben Polidori of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP). From 2021 to the end of 2024, staff at the Education Ministry recorded a total of 2.25 million hours in their individual time-savings accounts (CET), spread across more than 18,000 employees.

The data further outlines the overtime figures for all 20 government ministries. The Finance Ministry followed with approximately 1 million hours registered by 2,530 civil servants. The Grand Ducal Police, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, reported close to 1.3 million hours for 3,200 staff.

Other notable figures include the National Roads Administration, part of the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, with 360,000 overtime hours among 1,275 employees. In contrast, the Ministry of Research and Higher Education showed almost no overtime, with just 406 hours logged by 70 civil servants

The CET system allows state and municipal civil servants to convert surplus or overtime hours into paid leave, aiming to provide greater flexibility in managing working hours for both employees and employers.
