Starting with the 2026/2007 school year, all primary schools in Luxembourg will introduce project ‘Alpha’, a nationwide roll-out of French-based literacy instruction. The programme will begin with one age group and expand annually, Education Minister Claude Meisch confirmed Tuesday during a plenary session in the Chamber.
The initiative follows a pilot project launched in 2022 across four schools in Differdange, Dudelange, Schifflange, and Larochette. From the 2026/2027 academic year, schools across the country will offer literacy instruction in German or French, with pupils and parents able to opt for one of both.
Opposition MP Francine Closener of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) raised formal questions about the decision, requesting from Minister Meisch insight into the studies and data that support the move, and calling for clarity on the resources needed to implement it nationally. She further emphasised that these resources must not come at the expense of other areas.
Minister Meisch estimated that around 150 additional classrooms and the same number of extra staff will be required. An evaluation report on the pilot phase is expected in the coming weeks, according to the politician.
