
Officers conducting a speed check on Route de Luxembourg in Echternach on Thursday evening stopped an intoxicated driver after they failed to stop when asked. The driver initially attempted to speed away from the police, switching his vehicle lights off, but officers were able to swiftly catch up.
It transpired the motorist no longer possessed a driving licence and was in violation of a driving ban. Officers also noted that the man smelled of alcohol. Despite a positive breathalyser and drugs test, the man declined a trip to hospital for further checks. Police launched a procedure to extend the driving ban, and also noted that the man was in breach of drugs laws for cocaine possession.
Another incident related to alcohol took place on the CR134 between Gostingen and Ehnen at around 4.40pm on Thursday, after a drunk driver came off the road. He received treatment for his injuries at the scene of the crash and was later taken to hospital for further care. Police noted a positive breathalyser test and issued a provisional driving ban. The road was closed to traffic for some time to allow clean-up operations to take place.
Police carried out two alcohol checks between 9.45pm and 1.00am on Thursday night, checking 255 motorists on the N7 in Ettelbruck and in Ingeldorf. Six people were found to be over the limit, and three had their licences confiscated on the spot.
At around 7.20am on Friday morning one person was injured after crashing their car into a tree near Bourscheid.
