According to this study, drivers in Luxembourg are developing a reputation for being among the worst drivers in Europe, with many drink driving. Indeed, events this Friday night and Saturday morning did little to improve the situation in the Grand Duchy.
On Friday evening, around 10.30pm, police received a report about a car that had scraped against a guardrail on the A13 motorway. However, the driver did not stop and continued on his way. Officers later found his damaged vehicle in Esch. The driver was still sitting inside the car and was visibly intoxicated. At the police station, the man was uncooperative and refused to take an alcohol test. By order of the public prosecutor’s office, the car was seized, and the man was issued a driving ban.
The intoxicated driver was subsequently allowed to go home. However, around midnight , he attracted negative attention once again, provoking pedestrians and acting aggressively towards the police. The man spent the night in custody.
At 3.30am Saturday, another accident occurred in the city. According to initial reports, a motorist ran a red light and collided with another vehicle. One person was injured, and another vehicle was also damaged. Two cars were completely destroyed. The responsible driver was intoxicated, and his driving licence was confiscated.
Additionally, alcohol checks ordered by the public prosecutor’s office took place on Friday evening and through the night into Saturday in Esch, Bettembourg, Itzig, and in the city. In total, 387 drivers had to take breathalyser tests, and 8 of them had their licences immediately confiscated.
