The use of direct immediate payment (PID) for healthcare services is becoming increasingly widespread among doctors and dentists in Luxembourg, according to new figures from the Ministry of Health.
Responding to a parliamentary question, Health Minister Martine Deprez revealed that nearly half of the country’s contracted healthcare professionals have used the system at least once since its launch in September 2023. Specifically, 49.12% of doctors and dentists have utilised PID to settle costs directly with patients.
While adoption was slow in the initial weeks following the launch, usage has since stabilised. During the week of 9 March, the system was used by 1,996 practitioners. This represents approximately 40% of the 4,963 contracted doctors and dentists in Luxembourg – a figure that has remained steady since the beginning of the year.
The minister confirmed that the PID system is available to general practitioners, specialists, and dentists. However, it remains impossible to determine exactly how many practices are currently installing the system, as its use is not compulsory in Luxembourg. Implementation is handled by individual software providers.
Despite its growing popularity, the system is not yet available for all types of transactions. According to the ministry, direct immediate payment cannot currently be used for social third-party payments or for certain hospital treatments.
