In a response to a parliamentary question raised by MP Marc Goergen, the Ministry of Mobility admits that is not progressing as quickly with the expansion of cycling paths as they had anticipated in 2018. So far, only 73 km of the planned 430 km have been constructed.
Many of the paths are stuck in the research stage, where studies have to be conducted to determine whether it is at all possible to built a pathway.
Minister of mobility François Bausch says that the biggest difficulty are incomplete trajectories. In the north of the country, for example, there are many paths with missing bits. The current challenge is to acquire land upon which one can build the paths
The minister request that the committee of acquisition appoints one person to be responsible for all purchases of land related the expansion of the cycling paths.
He is also asking the help of the municipalities in the country. Without them, it wouldn’t be possible to create link the villages and cities via this new network, like it’s already the case for Nagem and Petange, for example.
However, the co-existence of bicycles and cars remains problematic, especially in densely populated areas. Meanwhile, across the country, on cycling paths, cyclists and pedestrians should meet each other with mutual respect.
