The hotel in question has been up for sale for some time and an interested buyer now seems to have come forward. Since the future owner has expressed willingness to rent the hotel to the National Reception Office (ONA) so that refugees can move in, the council of aldermen consulted with Consdorf residents about this decision on Monday evening.
Locals conveyed their dismay over the proposal, arguing that it would be a great loss for tourism in the area if the building would no longer be used as a hotel. Speaking for a local citizens’ initiative, Piet Van Luijk noted: “A good hotel, a modern hotel. Attractive and well-filled, which we want to keep that way.”
During a town meeting, some voices proposed that the municipality of Consdorf should purchase the hotel, an idea that Mayor Edith Jeitz quickly dismissed. As a result, some individuals countered that the municipality should remember to “think about us Luxembourgers, not only about foreigners”. As this statement earned a significant amount of applause, it became apparent that tourism is not the only reason for locals to refuse the sale of the hotel.
As there was even pushback from within the municipal council, Mayor Jeitz noted that the message had been received. She was not willing to give an interview after the discussion.
