The CNS has opened digital patient files for approximately 45% of those insured and the government prepares to introduce third-party payment, while the current procedure has patients pay up-front, and get reimbursed later.

The changes would make it possible for practitioners to submit receipts to the CNS, which would then promptly be able to decide on its share of the cost, and transfer the money.

The eSanté platform currently holds 625,564 patient files and is planning to extend the service to all the people who are CNS insured, at the beginning of next year.

If users do not wish to share their medical data on the “Dossier de soins partagé” (DSP), they need to opt out, as the file is automatically set up. Patients will also be able to indicate organ donation preferences and other medical specifics.

Lenert and Schneider presented a public campaign that aims to raise awareness about the new patient file and its functionalities on Tuesday.

After data protection concerns, the DSP was finally approved by parliament in 2010. It had been in the making for around 15 years by that point.

According to Lenert, the system will be automated by 2023.
