After government reshuffleClosener, Cruchten or Biancalana to lead the LSAP?

RTL Today
Etienne Schneider's impending departure from government in February led the LSAP's directing committee to announce their proposals for his replacements and other changes in the party.

Schneider's roles in government are set to be divided among three of his fellow party members: Franz Fayot is tipped to take Economy, Paulette Lenert will take Health and Dan Kersch will assume the post of Deputy Prime Minister. The party's general council will meet on 8 January to decide on these proposals.

These changes would lead to others, because the designated Minister of the Economy, Franz Fayot, would therefore renounce the presidency of the LSAP.

Behind the scenes, three names have been put forward as potential new leaders of the party. First is Francine Closener, who was welcomed back to the Krautmaart three weeks ago as an MP, replacing Marc Angel. On Tuesday, Closener is said to have expressed interest in the role of leader. The former Secretary of State and Minister for Business under Etienne Schneider also said she was happy to wait for the general council meeting to see how the issue unfolds.

In contrast, Yves Cruchten has ruled out running for leader, despite being asked to throw his hat into the ring. The Käerjeng councillor said he hoped to take a break after nine years in the role of general secretary, but would continue to monitor the situation. Cruchten also said he supported the idea of Closener as party president.

Dudelange mayor and Syvicol vice president Dan Biancalana, another potential candidate for the presidency, was unavailable for comment on Tuesday morning.

The final issue to be resolved is the replacement for Franz Fayot in the Chamber. Cecile Hemmen confirmed on Tuesday that she was planning on taking Fayot's place, a position she has already held in the past. Hemmen is to discuss this with the party.
