Both NGOs hoped to raise awareness and share their solidarity with the thousands of climate activists, including a group of Luxembourgers, who had been occupying the small village in North Rhine-Westphalia for weeks.

A Greenpeace member explained that Germany would never meet its climate ambitions if it enables the destruction of Lützerath for coal mining, pointing out that this method is no ‘absolutely longer profitable nowadays’.

As an alternative, the NGOs suggest that electricity can be generated from renewable sources until they eventually replace fossil fuels entirely.

While the site was finally cleared of climate activists earlier this week, including Greta Thunberg, the anti-coal demonstrators are not losing hope. As it will take years before the power generation company RWE can use the coal extracted from Lützerath, the activists hope that the contract might come under review in the future.
