We cannot stand by and watch while an additional 280 million tonnes of coal are burnt, said two Luxembourgish climate activists in the German town of Lützerath in conversation with RTL.

Some tens of thousands of protestors are estimated to have gathered in Lützerath over the weekend to demonstrate against the demolition of the village and extension of the adjacent open-cast coal mine.

They explained that focus should instead be put on the message of groups fighting for climate justice. Both used to be active in Luxembourg’s climate scene before moving abroad for their studies.

They made an appeal that clashes with the police should not distract people from the actual message of the protest, which they say is climate justice.
