The initiative – led by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity in partnership with the National Roads Administration, the Grand Ducal Police, and the Upper Sûre Nature Park – aims to tackle the environmental and safety risks posed by neglected boats left to deteriorate along the shoreline, according to a press release.

Set within a protected nature park, the Upper Sûre Lake is not only the country’s largest drinking water reservoir but also a popular leisure destination. Its clean waters and scenic trails attract visitors year-round for everything from water sports to peaceful hikes.

However, complaints had mounted over derelict boats cluttering the area – some in poor structural condition – prompting calls for action.

According to the authorities, these vessels not only spoil the natural setting but also pose hazards to both the ecosystem and public safety. Identifiable owners were contacted and informed of possible solutions. In cases where no owner could be traced, the boats were recovered directly by the state.

The clean-up forms part of a wider, ongoing campaign. Similar efforts are planned for other sections of the lake in the years ahead, as the government seeks to balance environmental protection with sustainable recreational use.
