Luxembourg CityCity alderman says Schueberfouer will not take place in usual format

With current government measures stating that large gatherings will be banned in the Grand Duchy until the end of July, it is difficult to imagine the hugely popular Schueberfouer taking place as usual.

Patrick Goldschmidt of the capital's college of aldermen said on Tuesday that if the fair did take place, it would not be the same fair we all know and love. The Schueberfouer, which attracts thousands of visitors on a daily basis, seems a million miles away from current social distancing and confinement guidelines. However, Luxembourg City's aldermen are working together with the relevant services to come up with an alternative.

Goldschmidt explained they were currently looking at options such as running small offshoots of the fair, scattered around the capital in the form of small, local "Kiermesse"-style fairs. However, these would not include the ever-popular food and drink stalls that traditionally attract the Schueberfouer's visitors, and the nightly parties would not be able to take place due to health concerns.

As part of his responsibilities, Goldschmidt stressed he hoped to offer some assistance to the business owners reliant on the Schueberfouer. The council also continued to discuss financial aid for businesses on Monday afternoon, as they debated two motions put forward by the majority and by the opposition.
