In conversation with RTL, Schifflange Mayor Paul Weimerskirch confirmed that a chemical contamination had taken place in a local canal. A special team from the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) identified the source of the contamination on Tuesday.
Schifflange residents had been complaining about a smell of gas in the area, which raised concerns about general safety. However, authorities gave the all-clear after determining the source of the stench.
Rue des Fleurs, Rue Basse, and Rue du Fossée were affected. According to Mayor Weimerskirch, a team will clean up the canal over the course of Wednesday morning. People are invited to call the municipality if the stench persists after the cleaning operation.
