On Wednesday morning, Blanche Weber from the Ecological Movement was at the RTL Radio studios to discuss the potential climate policies of Luxembourg’s new government. “Both parties made climate and biodiversity protection campaign issues, so we can expect that both things will be integrated in the coalition programme in concrete manner”, argued Weber.
The non-profit president went on to say that the proposals made by the Democratic Party (DP) are more concrete than those of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV). She further criticised that Luc Frieden repeatedly noted that growth is now more important than ever, which is a notion she questioned.
When asked about the election blow suffered by The Greens, Weber refrained from commenting. She underlined that the Ecological Movement is politically neutral and that, apart from the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR), every of Luxembourg’s parties has ecological policies.
Weber noted that it is now the role of civil society to demand changes. The first step is to help guide the discussions around the expected coalition agreement, according to the Movement’s president, who has no doubt that things in Luxembourg have to change.
Infinite growth on a finite planet does not work out, she claimed and made the case that the social system must not rely on continuous growth. Weber also argued that the state budget should be revised to abolish counterproductive subsidies that further the biodiversity crisis.
