Fraudsters and scammers have become a frequent issue in Luxembourg. On Monday, the Grand Ducal police informed people of a new fraudulent method of asking motorists who stop at the Berchem gas station for help.

On Sunday, one driver experienced the scam first hand. The swindler pretended to be a tourist whose bags and money were stolen. He then asked for money to be able to fill up his car with petrol and continue his journey, while promising to immediately transfer the money back to his victim.

The culprit proceeded to show a screenshot of the transaction to his victim, who he then persuaded to give him the money in cash. The scammed driver apparently gave him “a sum of three figures”. A formal complaint was filed and the investigation is still underway.
