The appeal came on Monday in response to a case of rabies in a young dog in Rhineland-Palatinate two weeks ago.

The dog was part of a group of domestic animals that had been brought from Russia into the EU, from which Luxembourg cannot be ruled out at this stage, according to ALVA. No case of rabies has been detected in the Grand Duchy over the past 25 years.

Rabies is transmitted from animal to animal and, in rare cases, can also infect humans. ALVA reminds the public that anyone wishing to bring a dog or cat into the country from abroad should ensure that the animal is microchipped, has a health certificate, and is vaccinated against rabies.

For questions or doubt, people should contact ALVA by email at or by phone at (+352) 247-82539.
