The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) has issued a product recall for Perfit brand red snapper steaks due to a potential health risk.

The recall affects the one-kilogram packages of Perfit brand steaks with the specific batch number 25-00409 and a best-before date of 10 April 2027. The alert was triggered by the possible presence of ciguatoxins.

Health authorities are urging consumers who have purchased this product not to consume it. The ALVA advises returning the item to the point of sale for a full refund. The product was distributed through several retailers in Luxembourg.

Ciguatera poisoning is the most common form of marine biotoxin food poisoning worldwide, with an estimated 10,000 to 50,000 cases reported annually. The illness is a complex syndrome with gastrointestinal, neurological, and cardiovascular effects. Symptoms typically appear two to twelve hours after consuming contaminated fish.
