Luxembourg AirportAir traffic to be disrupted over next month due to radar software installation

RTL Today
Passengers flying through Luxembourg Airport in Findel may be affected by flight disruptions over the course of the next weeks.

The airport is due to install new radar equipment in its air tower, which will require a number of tests. As a result, this could impact air traffic and cause flight delays.

The Air Navigation Administration (ANA) announced that it would install new air traffic control radar software between 6 and 7 June. Once installed, the airport will have to conduct tests to ensure the software works successfully.

Transition phase lasting from 8 June to 7 July

The following transition phase will incur air traffic restrictions, affecting both instrument flight rules and visual flight rules. According to the ANA, the month-long transition period could be adapted provided tests run successfully and air controllers are able to swiftly familiarise themselves with the new system.

Flights may be diverted

The airline Luxair is following the situation closely and confirmed that it would be prepared to explore different options. The airline will endeavour to reduce the impact on its customers as much as possible. For instance, if Luxair flights have to be diverted, the airline will ensure that its passengers will have as much assistance as possible. In general, flights are likely to be diverted towards Frankfurt Hahn Airport in Germany.

The airline urges its customers to look up the situation of their flight on luxair.lu ahead of arriving at the airport, especially between the period of 8 June and 7 July.

Currently, around twenty airlines operate flights at Luxembourg Airport. An average of 200 flights take off or land at Findel each day with a maximum of 14,000 passengers in peak season. The top three destinations by number of passengers are Porto, Lisbon, and Munich.
