The case made headlines in July 2019 when two municipal employees were suspended from Hesperange council on suspicion of having embezzled almost €3 million.
The two individuals were placed in pre-trial detention earlier in October but on Friday, new revelations came to light. According to the municipality's representatives, the two suspects admitted their wrongdoing on 3 October 2019 and offered to reimburse the stolen funds.
This case has forced municipal authorities to implement preventative measures, including the countersignature by a member of the mayoral council or aldermen for any order exceeding €10,000, checks for the GESCOM application and an audit by a management consulting firm to detect any possible flaws in the system.
