At around 5.15am, a lorry collided with a car on the A4 motorway towards Esch-sur-Alzette. The car subsequently caught fire. The driver was able to escape in time, but was taken to hospital after the shock of the crash.
The accident occurred near the Leudelange/Sud exit. After 7am, traffic authorities reported that all lanes were still closed and that motorists were being diverted via the Pontpierre service station. Traffic resumed at 8am, but only on the hard shoulder.
Congestion quickly formed in the Luxembourg-Esch direction for several kilometres. At 8am, the traffic jam even stretched as far as the Leudelange/Nord slip road.
The left-hand lane has just reopened to traffic in the opposite direction, however the traffic congestion is just as significant - stretching as far as the Lankelz crossroads at the entrance to Esch-sur-Alzette.
