According to a press release by the National Roads Administration, the two radar units, positioned on both sides of the motorway between the Aire de Berchem and the Gasperich interchange, will monitor whether drivers are respecting the rules on the newly introduced third lane reserved exclusively for carpooling and buses.
The carpool lane was opened in March 2025 as part of the broader A3 widening project, which saw the first section upgraded to 2x3 lanes.
From Monday, the radars will be fully operational in both directions. According to the press release, the devices use cameras capable of identifying silhouettes in order to determine how many people are inside each vehicle. The administration stresses that this process complies with all data protection requirements, including GDPR.
During the testing phase, motorists who use the carpool lane incorrectly will not receive fines or warnings. The automated sanctioning system will remain inactive while authorities verify that the equipment functions correctly. The beginning of the enforcement phase, when fines will be issued, will be announced at a later stage.
Only vehicles carrying at least two occupants are permitted to use the carpool lane on the left-hand side of this stretch of the A3. The aim is to encourage car-sharing, improve traffic flow, and support a smoother transition toward the fully expanded motorway.
