The Livange viaduct, a key component of the A3 motorway widening project to 2x3 lanes, is nearing the end of its full redevelopment and will reopen to traffic on Monday, 12 May.

Since June 2024, motorists travelling from Luxembourg City toward Thionville have been restricted to two narrow lanes while crossing the railway tracks at the Livange viaduct. This temporary measure was necessary to allow crews to widen the bridge deck on the opposite side, extending it towards France.

Starting Monday, 12 May, traffic will resume normal operations as the entire viaduct deck reopens.

Disruption details

To facilitate final work, the following closures and diversions will be in place.

From Friday, 9 May (midnight) to Monday, 12 May (~5am):

  • A3 towards Luxembourg City (between Croix de Bettembourg and Croix de Gasperich)
  • Slip roads at Croix de Bettembourg (from A13 towards A3/Luxembourg City)
  • Access ramp at Livange interchange (from N31 towards A3/Luxembourg City)

From Friday, 9 May (~2am) to Monday, 12 May (~5am):

  • A3 towards Metz (between Croix de Gasperich and Croix de Bettembourg)
  • Slip roads at Croix de Gasperich (from A1 and A6 towards A3/Metz)
  • Access ramp at Livange interchange (from N31 towards A3/Metz)

Access to Aire de Berchem will be closed from 8 May 2025 at 9.30pm until 12 May at around 5am. Due to preparatory work beginning a few hours earlier, traffic disruptions are expected starting in the late afternoon.

During the project’s final phase, the Livange access ramp to the A3 (towards France) was temporarily reconfigured to divert traffic onto a viaduct deck. Now, crews are restoring the ramp to its original layout, requiring further geometric adjustments.

Work has entered its final stages as of last week, with multiple asphalt layers already laid on the viaduct deck. According to the National Roads Authority, modern standards mandate a waterproofing layer on the reinforced concrete deck to prevent water infiltration as well as a protective asphalt layer to shield the waterproofing and two final asphalt layers for durability. Safety barrier installation is currently underway, along with road connections at the viaduct’s northern and southern ends.

The A3’s full closure over the 9–11 May weekend will allow crews to finalise asphalt transitions in open sections and apply permanent road markings.
