The Luxembourg District Court has ruled that former Defence Minister François Bausch and former Chief of Staff of the Luxembourg Army, Alain Duschène, will stand trial in connection with the 2019 explosion at the Waldhof military weapons depot.
The Luxembourg District Court has ruled that former Defence Minister François Bausch of The Greens and former Chief of Staff of the Luxembourg Army, Alain Duschène, will stand trial in connection with the 2019 explosion at the Waldhof weapons depot. In its decision of 24 September 2025, the court found there was sufficient evidence to refer both men to a criminal chamber on charges of involuntary bodily harm.
On 14 February 2019, a 48kg grenade exploded in the military weapons depot at Waldhof where two individuals were fatally injured. Prior to the explosion in 2019, the army was well aware of the fact that the depot was no longer up to date.
Two other senior army officers – the commander of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (SEDAL) at the time of the incident and his deputy – will not face trial after the court decided there was no case against them.
The ruling may be appealed to the Court of Appeal within five days of notification.
It is important to note that the finding of "sufficient evidence" does not imply guilt. Both Mr Bausch and Mr Duschène remain presumed innocent unless and until convicted by a final court judgment.
