Following a meeting with Finance Minister Gilles Roth, the General Confederation of Civil Servants (CGFP) is calling for improvements to the government's proposed tax reform.
In a press release, the CGFP stressed that the planned move toward individual taxation should not result in a heavier financial burden for any household. Married couples with only one income, or where one partner contributes more than three-quarters of the household income, could be particularly affected, the union warned. The proposed 20-year transition period for phasing out Tax Class 2 is also deemed far too short in the press release.
The union also expressed concern that single parents might not receive sufficient relief under the new system, despite often facing precarious financial situations. Questions were also raised regarding the treatment of widowed or divorced individuals.
The CGFP urged the government to ensure that no household loses out as a result of the tax reform. At the same time, the union welcomed the finance minister's openness to dialogue.
