The number of police call-outs for domestic violence in Luxembourg rose significantly last year, with authorities recording over 1,170 interventions.

Police interventions for domestic violence in Luxembourg rose to 1,178 in 2024, up from 1,057 the previous year, according to data from the Ministry for Gender Equality and Diversity. This represents a monthly average of 98 interventions.

The ministry also reported a corresponding increase in domestic exclusion orders, which climbed to 287 from 246 in 2023. In these cases, the vast majority of perpetrators were men (87%), while women accounted for the majority of victims (81%).

Officials suggest two potential explanations for the rise. On one hand, increased public awareness, better detection by authorities, and simplified reporting procedures may be encouraging more victims to come forward.

On the other hand, the figures could also point to a genuine worsening of the problem, reflecting an intensification of violence or a higher number of cases. This possibility raises questions about underlying societal causes, such as gender inequality, financial insecurity, and emotional or economic dependency.
