Luxembourg's social sector is warning of a potential homelessness crisis "the likes of which has never been seen before," prompting calls for emergency government action.
As part of its social advocacy programme, the Federation of Social Sector Actors (FEDAS) has issued a public plea for greater political courage to address the growing issue of homelessness in Luxembourg.
FEDAS estimates the current number of homeless individuals in the country to be between 600 and 2,000 – a figure it says is corroborated by the intake numbers from the latest "Wanteraktioun", the annual winter shelter scheme.
The federation is warning of an unprecedented "wave of homelessness" and is calling on the government to take immediate countermeasures. Its primary demands include the establishment of emergency facilities to provide immediate shelter.
FEDAS also argues that municipalities must be held more accountable, and that both private individuals and commercial entities with available housing must be mobilised to help address the crisis.
