Work on Ettelbruck's €38 million underpass has reached its halfway point, with waterproofing and structural finishing now underway as part of a wider €84 million redevelopment of the station district.
Work on Ettelbruck's long-planned underpass is advancing, with completion of the 300m tunnel now halfway done and waterproofing works currently underway, according to the National Roads Administration.
The €38 million tunnel is part of a wider €84 million redevelopment of Ettelbruck station and its surrounding district, which includes the new Patton Bridge, upgrades to Rue Prince Henri and Avenue Salentiny, and a full redesign of Rue JF Kennedy. Authorities expect finishing works and technical installations to take place between 2027 and 2028.
Progress on the tunnel also depends on relocating a petrol station at the entrance to Ettelbruck. A new station is being built near the Patton Bridge in Erpeldange, after which the old one will be demolished to make way for the eastern entrance and exit of the underpass.
Behind the new station, officials also plan to construct a parking area for around 30 buses, equipped with sanitary facilities for drivers. Costing about €1 million, the bus lot is intended to provide a long-term solution to recurring problems with buses taking breaks in town.
Work could begin next autumn, pending permits. Once the bus parking is completed, Rue du Viaduc will fully reopen between Laduno and the roundabout.
Redevelopment of the Ettelbruck train station, the second largest in the country, initially began in 2017.
