A bus carrying Luxembourg’s Under-21 national football team with 33 people on board overturned on Thursday evening in Brittany, leaving eight injured, according to local emergency services. Authorities announced on Friday morning that all players have been discharged from hospital.
A sudden illness is believed to have caused the bus accident on Thursday night in Brittany, the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) said in a statement. Thirty-three people were on board at the time.
The driver reportedly suffered a medical emergency, causing the bus to overturn on the N24 near Languidic (Morbihan). Eight people were injured, though the fire brigade confirmed that none are in life-threatening condition.
Firefighters told AFP, adding that the injured were being evacuated to regional hospitals. In a press release, the Luxembourgish Football Federation (FLF) confirmed that five players were taken to the hospital as a precaution, due to having suffered cuts and bruises.
The bus was found "lying on its side in a ditch" near Languidic (Morbihan) on the RN24, firefighters said, noting that significant rescue resources were deployed.
Late Friday morning, the federation announced that all injured players had been safely discharged from hospital, a development warmly welcomed by all sides. The Luxembourg–France match, originally scheduled for this evening in Lorient, has been postponed to 3 October following a joint decision by the FLF and FFF, later confirmed by UEFA. The fixture is part of the qualifying campaign for the 2027 European Championship.
