After the deadly funicular crash in Lisbon, Luxembourg's CFL has assured that its Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg line is equipped with automatic brakes that would halt cabins instantly in case of a cable failure.
Following the recent funicular accident in Lisbon that left 16 dead, our colleagues at RTL.lu asked Luxembourg's national railway company (CFL) whether such an incident could also occur in Luxembourg.
In response, CFL, which operates the funicular between Pfaffenthal and Kirchberg, explained that the cabins are immediately braked by the built-in automated system if a cable were to tear or if the resistance of the transport cable were to weaken. This safety system excludes the possibility of the cabins continuing to move.
The traction cable is inspected monthly by camera, with more in-depth maintenance carried out three times a year, according to the railway operator.
