Minister Léon Gloden says 11 million euros are at stake in the potential merger of four northern municipalities.
The merger process has been ongoing for decades.
Currently, the four municipalities receive 99.5 million euros from the national endowment fund. If the merger is completed, the newly-formed Nordstad municipality could receive 11% more, or 110.5 million euros, from the government's coffers.
Minister of the Interior Léon Gloden published these figures in response to a parliamentary question submitted by DP MP André Bauler.
The CSV minister stressed that the desire to merge must come from within and every process involved would be positively backed by the Ministry, as well as the expert group for municipal mergers. He declined to comment on any specific projects that the four municipalities involved hope to implement in the new Nordstad.
A further stage in the Nordstad process in the referendum in Erpeldange scheduled for 23 November. If a majority of Erpeldange residents vote in favour of continuing talks in November, then a subsequent referendum will take place in 2027 for residents of Diekirch, Ettelbruck, Erpeldange and Schieren.
