The government is set to meet with employer representatives and the trade unions for the third time next week, as the Prime Minister expressed his hopes for a resolution.
Negotiations have been rocky, with all three parties struggling to strike a balance between their positions on collective agreements, opening hours, Sunday commercial times and pensions.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden addressed members of the media on Thursday, saying it was necessary to make compromises in a democracy. But it was not necessarily required to agree with everyone on all points, the PM added, when asked what form this compromise should take.
Frieden said he would like to take proposals based on the trade discussions to the Chamber of Deputies and make the necessary changes to law. He expressed hope that he would find broad support and understanding among fellow MPs, and said he wanted to conclude the negotiations in this third round of discussions, which will begin in early September.
