Vianden celebrated the full reopening of its outdoor pool complex Thursday as the newly renovated 50-metre pool welcomed swimmers after a six-year, €4.8 million restoration project.

Vianden's outdoor swimming complex has officially reopened following a €4.8 million renovation, with Thursday's inauguration of its 50-metre pool marking the completion of a multi-phase restoration project. The smaller pool had partially reopened in summer 2024 with limited capacity.

The facility, one of Luxembourg's many popular open-air pools, closed in September 2019 after safety inspections revealed non-compliant infrastructure. The municipal government at the time mandated full renovation before considering reopening.

Current mayor François Weyrich oversaw the project's completion, allowing partial reopening last summer at reduced capacity (500 visitors versus the pre-2019 1,500 limit). Thursday's ceremony, attended by Delegate Tourism Minister Eric Thill and local officials, proceeded despite unfavourable weather.

To address lifeguard shortages, Vianden trained municipal staff to supplement professional personnel. The commune had launched a recruitment drive but received insufficient applications.

Additional improvements are planned, including replacing the smaller pool with a stainless steel model and adding a water play area.

Minister Thill noted the state covered 70% of renovation costs through subsidies.
