Since June 2024, motorists heading from Luxembourg to Thionville have had to navigate narrowed lanes on the viaduct as work progressed on widening the bridge deck toward France. This followed a previous expansion of the opposite side to accommodate three lanes. Starting Monday, 12 May, drivers will finally be able to cross the viaduct under normal traffic conditions, with the entire bridge deck reopened.
During the final phase of works, the access ramp to the A3 at Livange had been reconfigured to divert France-bound traffic onto a specific section of the viaduct. With completion in sight, this ramp is now being reshaped again to restore its original layout.
Final works have been underway since last week. Several asphalt layers have been laid on the viaduct’s surface. According to the National Roads Administration, the process includes first applying a waterproofing membrane to protect the reinforced concrete structure from water damage, followed by multiple asphalt layers – one to safeguard the waterproofing, and two top layers to complete the road surface.
Installation of safety barriers is currently in progress, along with final connections to the road on both the northern and southern ends of the viaduct.
The full reopening will coincide with a planned weekend closure of the A3 from 9 to 11 May. During this closure, final surfacing works and road markings will be completed on sections of the viaduct currently in use, as confirmed by the administration.
