Major infrastructure projectHowald station on track for completion by late 2026

The Howald rail station project remains on schedule for late 2026 completion, with critical infrastructure works set to temporarily disrupt service during summer 2025.

Luxembourg City’s new multimodal station in Howald remains on track for completion by late 2026, with major construction works scheduled between 12 July and 15 September 2025 that will temporarily disrupt rail service in the area.

Since construction began in January 2024, the project has progressed toward becoming the capital’s primary rail junction. Once operational, the station will serve as the main transfer point for trains accessing Luxembourg City’s central station while separating regional and international routes for improved efficiency.

In an interview with our colleagues from RTL Télé, CFL spokesperson Sandy Nonnweiler stated that the idea for a multimodal station first emerged “many years ago.” She explained that once the Bettembourg-Luxembourg City line is completed, CFL will be able to decouple the Luxembourg City-Esch-Rodange and Luxembourg City-Thionville-Metz lines in Bettembourg. This will allow CFL to gain operational flexibility, enhancing punctuality and capacity, according to Nonnweiler.

The 2025 summer works will involve complete removal of existing rails and overhead lines, along with platform reconstruction across three 900-metre sections totalling 2,700 meters of renewed infrastructure, as explained by CFL engineer David Da Silva.

He stated that as of 15 September, regional trains from Bettembourg will permanently use Platform 2. Platform 1 will be out of service until the connection with the Bettembourg-Luxembourg City line can be made, according to Da Silva.

In the future, all international trains (including TGVs), will enter the central railway station at Platform 1.

The new Bettembourg-Luxembourg City route is expected to open by autumn 2027.
