Former Caritas manager Tom Brassel told MPs he alerted leadership to dangerous credit lines a full month before the scandal broke, a warning that allegedly received no response.
Members of the Special Parliamentary Committee on the Caritas Affair have condemned "grave governance failures" within the organisation, following Wednesday's hearing with former management team member Tom Brassel.
During the two-hour session – part of an ongoing review of the misappropriation of tens of millions uncovered in 2024 – MPs cited evidence of a "disengaged administrative board" and systemic oversight lapses. Brassel's testimony corroborated revelations from Radio 100,7's investigative podcast, including his June 2024 warning to Vice-President Pit Bouché about excessive credit lines, which allegedly went unaddressed. Brassel declined press questions after the hearing.
The committee will convene representatives from two banks that extended over €30 million in loans to Caritas during May hearings. Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Minster for Foreign Affairs Xavier Bettel, and Minister of Justice Elisabeth Margue are also scheduled to testify.
