Stealing Playstation 5Security guard injured while stopping shoplifter in Luxembourg City

RTL Today
An incident at an electronics store in Luxembourg City left a private security guard injured after the guard intervened to prevent a theft shortly after the store opened on Tuesday.

A security guard at the MediaMarkt electronics store near the central railway station in Luxembourg City was stabbed while attempting to stop a shoplifter on Tuesday morning.

According to information provided to RTL, the incident occurred shortly after the store opened at 10am. A customer approached the checkout counter with a PlayStation 5, valued at approximately €750, before attempting to flee the premises via an escalator that leads down from the store. A security guard employed by a private company managed to grab on the individual, but the suspect took out a knife and injured the guard.

The injured security guard was transported to the hospital by ambulance. During the course of their investigation, police located the suspected shoplifter and recovered the videogame console from their residence. The suspect was subsequently arrested following orders from the public prosecutor’s office and is set to appear before an examining magistrate on Wednesday morning.

Private security personnel are authorised only to detain suspected thieves within the confines of the store premises. To conduct searches or further investigations, law enforcement must be called in. Speaking to our colleagues from RTL.lu, several business owners in the Gare neighbourhood noted that thefts are not uncommon in the area.
