Three organisations – the Suessem Citizens’ Initiative, Mouvement écologique, and the Kordall section of Natur & Ëmwelt – have jointly demanded that construction work on the Käerjeng bypass should not commence until a definitive court judgment has been delivered.
In a letter sent on Tuesday, the groups appealed to political leaders to refrain from starting the planned works on the bypass this autumn. They stress that if the project is ultimately halted by a court decision, it would result in significant environmental damage and an unnecessary expenditure of taxpayers’ money.
They say the road is not necessary given the limited local traffic, that alternatives such as improved public transport, traffic calming, and cycling links have not been properly studied, and that the planned route would destroy or fragment valuable forests, including the Natura 2000-designated Zämerbësch and Bobësch. There is also concern about inadequate environmental compensation, flooding and water-management risks, and unresolved land acquisition.
The three organisations argue that the decision to build a bypass should be reversed to prevent serious and irreversible harm to natural habitats.
