A knife attack that left a student injured in Dudelange in January 2023 has resulted in a suspended prison sentence for the 21-year-old perpetrator.
A 21-year-old Syrian national, who stabbed a student in the leg and hand with a knife in January 2023, has been sentenced by the Luxembourg City Court.
The court handed down a fully suspended four-year prison sentence, conditional on the defendant completing therapy over the next five years and either entering vocational training or securing employment. Prosecutors had initially sought a 15-year prison term.
The incident took place in the early afternoon at Emile Mayrisch Park in Dudelange. The defendant first attempted to snatch a phone from another student before taking a pack of cigarettes from the eventual victim and their friend. The subsequent attack occurred without any apparent reason.
One of the victims was awarded €1,000 in damages. A second victim is currently undergoing an expert assessment to determine the extent of the damage caused and the corresponding compensation.
