Luxembourg is setting its sights on hosting the prestigious Tour de France kickoff in 2028, Prime Minister Luc Frieden announced on Friday.

Following a Council of Government meeting on Friday, the government has authorised the Minister for Sport to formally submit the country's bid to the race organisers. The final decision, however, rests with the Tour's organising committee.

A Luxembourg-based Grand Départ in 2028 would carry significant symbolic weight: The year marks the centenary of Nicolas Frantz’s second Tour de France victory and 70 years since Charly Gaul famously donned the yellow jersey.
