Choosing a country to settle in is no simple matter, but the new Remitly Immigration Index 2026 offers some useful reference points. The study compares 82 countries across 34 criteria ranging from cost of living to safety, salaries, education, healthcare and infrastructure quality.
Topping the rankings this year is Switzerland, which dethrones Iceland and establishes itself as the most attractive country for those wishing to emigrate. The report highlights its exceptional income potential, its high-performing healthcare system and a very high level of safety. Iceland slips to second place but remains one of the most appreciated countries for its quality of life, family policies and environment. And just behind it, on the third step of the podium, is Luxembourg.
Its high salaries, safety, and a public transport network considered one of the best in Europe make the Grand Duchy so attractive. All arguments that reinforce its image as a stable and appealing country, which will come as no surprise to the many cross-border workers and expatriates already settled in the region.
Australia comes in fourth place, the only non-European country in the top five, followed by Germany, presented as a solid choice for those seeking career prospects in the continent's largest economy.
The top 10 is completed by Ireland, the United States, Denmark, Norway, and Spain.
Remitly also examined other criteria. For families, Spain leads thanks to its education system, parental leave and childcare costs. On cost of living, Saudi Arabia tops the list, while Luxembourg ranks eighth globally, just behind Norway and Denmark in Europe.
For Luxembourg residents considering a move abroad or wondering about the most attractive destinations, this ranking offers a clear overview: Europe remains well out in front, and the Grand Duchy continues to feature among the most sought-after countries, notably in terms of safety, where it ranks as the fifth safest country in the world.
