On Tuesday around midday, MP Stéphanie Weydert of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) announced her decision to step down as president of the special parliamentary committee attempting to shed light on the Caritas scandal. The move comes amid concerns over a potential conflict of interest.
Weydert, who works for a law firm representing one of the banks involved in the case, has not been actively practising law. However, Caritas raised allegations that her professional affiliation could create a conflict of interest.
In response, Weydert sought an assessment from the Chamber of Deputies’ consultative committee, which concluded that the public might indeed perceive a connection between her roles. To avoid any such perception, Weydert decided to resign as committee president and leave the committee entirely.
This development follows the resignation of her party colleague, Laurent Zeimet, who stepped down as committee president in November 2024 after just one month in the role. Zeimet similarly cited a potential conflict of interest due to his association with a law firm involved in the case.
