Caritas has questioned the legal grounds of a parliamentary commission investigating its €61 million embezzlement case, citing an ongoing penal inquiry and alleging a conflict of interest involving the commission's president.

On Wednesday morning, the Chamber's special commission tasked with investigating the Caritas embezzlement case is set to convene and discuss further steps. Ahead of the meeting, the humanitarian organisation has now addressed a letter to parliament to question the legal basis of this very commission given that a penal enquiry is already underway.

Caritas further alleges a conflict of interest on behalf of commission president Stéphanie Weydert, who works as a lawyer for Arendt & Medernach, the firm defending one of the banks at the centre of the investigation.

The embezzlement case involves a sum of €61 million and was first uncovered in 2024.
