Just one month after his appointment, Laurent Zeimet stepped down as President of the Special Parliamentary Committee on the Caritas scandal, due to concerns over a conflict of interest.

Laurent Zeimet has resigned from his position as President of the Special Parliamentary Committee investigating the Caritas scandal, just one month after taking office.

The MP for the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) confirmed his resignation, which was first reported by Radio 100,7, to our colleagues from RTL.lu. Zeimet, also the Mayor of Bettembourg, cited a potential conflict of interest due to his registration with the law firm Schiltz & Schiltz.

A successor is expected to be nominated during Thursday’s plenary session. RTL sources indicate that CSV MP Stéphanie Weydert will be proposed as the new committee president, while CSV MP Charel Weiler is set to replace Zeimet as a member of the committee.

The committee is tasked with investigating the €61-million fraud at Caritas.
