Inrix’s 2024 Global Traffic Scorecard study places London at the top of Europe’s congestion rankings, with drivers there spending 101 hours in traffic jams last year. Luxembourg City, by contrast, ranks much lower at 87th place globally.
While traffic in Luxembourg City may feel frustrating for motorists, the situation could therefore be much worse. The study, conducted by Inrix, a leading firm in connected car technology, analysed traffic patterns in over 900 cities across 37 countries.
Istanbul claims the title of the most congested city worldwide, with drivers losing 105 hours to traffic jams in 2024. The Turkish metropolis outpaces New York and Chicago, while London ranks fourth globally and is also Europe’s most congested city. Drivers in London spent 102 hours in traffic last year. In fact, the study calculates that UK drivers lose £591 (around €712) annually in wasted fuel and work time due to congestion, adding up to a total cost of €94 billion across the country.
Paris follows closely, with 97 hours spent in traffic jams in 2024. Luxembourg City, however, fares better in comparison, with drivers losing “only” 55 hours to traffic congestion – a 2% increase from 2023.
Esch-sur-Alzette was also included in the study, ranking 283rd worldwide, with 36 hours lost to traffic jams in 2024.
