Snow is set to return to Luxembourg on Wednesday, with authorities issuing yellow alerts for snow and orange flood alerts across Luxembourg, as rivers may approach critical levels due to the expected snowmelt.

After a weekend of snowfall and icy conditions, followed by strong winds on Monday that triggered 400 emergency calls and caused 65 trees to fall, snow is set to return to Luxembourg alongside a notable flooding risk.

Orange flood alert issued for north and south

The Water Management Authority has issued an orange flood alert for both northern and southern Luxembourg. Particularly at-risk areas include those along the Alzette and Attert rivers in southern Luxembourg and along the Sûre in northern Luxembourg, especially near Diekirch and Bollendorf.

According to the latest information from inondations.lu, water levels in the rivers of southern Luxembourg are expected to rise rapidly starting this evening, due to precipitation and subsequent snowmelt.

During the night into Thursday, the 'orange awareness level' will likely be exceeded on the Alzette, Attert, and Eisch rivers.

The Alzette, in particular, could see a jump to red status from early morning, with particular emphasis on Mersch and Ettelbrück.

The Water Management Authority had initially issued a yellow alert, which was raised to orange on early Wednesday afternoon. The alert remains in place from 1pm on Wednesday to 1pm on Friday.

The Am Däich car park in Ettelbruck will be closed from 3pm this Wednesday, according to local authorities, who have requested that people remove their cars and not leave them there overnight.

The Moselle region is not under any alert since there is no risk of floods, but water levels are expected to rise again. You can monitor the latest developments on inondations.lu.

Yellow snow alert

Meteolux placed the entire country under a yellow alert for snow on Wednesday: the alert is currently valid from 3pm to 8pm in the North of the country, while the South is under watch from 3pm to 6pm.

According to the government's official meteorological portal, snowfall is expected to result in an accumulation of 2–6cm. However, Meteolux cautioned that "the variability in temperature models creates significant uncertainty about the possible amounts of snow".
