During summer 2023, the Käerjeng bypass project underwent significant proposed changes. The question now is: where does it stand?
The revised bypass planning aims to minimise the impact on the Bobësch forest and the "Natura 2000" zone. Finalised in July 2023, the latest proposal routes the bypass between the Bobësch forest and the Bascharage/Sanem train station. However, this would require relocating the French company "Saint Gobain," as the bypass cuts through its property.
Discussions between "Saint Gobain" and the Ministry of the Economy have concluded, according to latest information received by RTL. The matter is now with the "Comité d'acquisition" (Acquisition Committee) at the Ministry of Finance. The Paris-based company has reportedly agreed to vacate its Bascharage site and relocate to the Wolser industrial zone in Dudelange, ensuring it remains active in Luxembourg. However, outstanding issues include relocation costs and the fate of equipment that may become unusable after dismantling.
The proposed bypass will span 4 kilometers and feature six roundabouts. Plans also include a new transport hub near the Bascharage/Sanem train station.
Despite these developments, opposition persists. The local citizens' initiative "BIGS" continues to challenge the project, having filed a complaint with the administrative court.
