Luxembourg's vehicle fleet is shifting, with petrol cars now surpassing diesel for the first time, while hybrids and electric vehicles gain popularity.
Luxembourg's vehicle fleet is undergoing a significant transformation, with petrol engines now leading the pack, surpassing diesel for the first time in years. Meanwhile, hybrids and electric vehicles are also becoming increasingly popular among Luxembourg's motorists.
Recent data revealed that as of December 2024, Luxembourg had 197,815 petrol vehicles, accounting for 42.88% of all registered cars, compared to 173,363 diesel vehicles, which made up 37.57%. This shift marks a clear departure from the country's historical preference for diesel engines.
The shift was outlined in response to a parliamentary question from MP Ben Polidori (LSAP), with Ministers of Mobility and Economy, Yuriko Backes and Lex Delles, providing insights into the current makeup of the nation's vehicle fleet, which includes both private and company cars.
The ministers also highlighted the growing popularity of electric and hybrid vehicles in recent years. Non-rechargeable hybrids, both petrol and diesel, totalled 40,564 in December 2024, representing 8.79% of the fleet. Electric vehicles have made a notable impact, with 32,062 registered (6.95%), reflecting a staggering 23-fold increase in sales over the past five years. Additionally, the number of plug-in hybrids reached 17,085, making up 3.70% of the fleet, with sales nearly ten times higher than in 2019.

"Electric cars are increasingly chosen as company cars, which is particularly due to the company car benefit, which is especially advantageous for fully electric vehicles", explained the ministers.
However, they also noted that the share of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) remains marginal for now.
